Mission

The mission of the Melissa Pierce Project, Inc. is to foster community empowerment while honoring our rich history through education, the arts, social services, housing, and recreation in the historic Joppa-Joppee community, all aimed at promoting historic preservation.

ABOUT: Melissa Pierce Project

The Melissa Pierce Project, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to historic preservation while fostering community empowerment in the Joppa-Joppee Community, one of Dallas’ historic Freedman’s Towns.

The story begins in 1953, during the era of segregation, when Ms. Melissa Pierce, the child of a former slave, donated land so that Wilmer-Hutchins ISD could build a school for the children of Joppa-Joppee. That school became a foundation for education, resilience, and hope in the community.

In 2021, the former Melissa Pierce School was entrusted to the Melissa Pierce Project, Inc. by Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity; ensuring its legacy of historic preservation would continue. Today, we are transforming the space into The Place at Honey Springs; a multi-purpose center designed to serve as a beacon of hope. This space will nurture education, arts, culture, and recreation, while creating room for expression, connection, and community growth.

Rooted in history, we are committed to cultivating opportunity, celebrating heritage, and building a brighter future for generations to come.
