Be Part of the Legacy- Join Us
The mission of the Melissa Pierce Project, Inc. is to cultivate a connected and empowered community while honoring our rich history through education, the arts, and recreation in the historic Joppa-Joppee community.
The Melissa Pierce Project, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving history while empowering the future of the Joppa-Joppee Community, one of Dallas’ historic Freedman’s Towns.
The story begins in 1953, during the era of segregation, when Ms. Melissa Pierce, the child of a former slave, donated land so that Wilmer-Hutchins ISD could build a school for the children of Joppa-Joppee. That school became a foundation for education, resilience, and hope in the community.
In 2021, the former Melissa Pierce School was entrusted to the Melissa Pierce Project, Inc., by Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity; ensuring its legacy would continue. Today, we are transforming the space into The Place at Honey Springs; a multi-purpose center designed to serve as a beacon of hope. This space will nurture education, arts, culture, and recreation, while creating room for expression, connection, and community growth.
Rooted in history, we are committed to cultivating opportunity, celebrating heritage, and building a brighter future for generations to come.
Together, we can create positive change. Support our cause and help us make a lasting impact on the community.
